Sink into sleep: Overcoming insomnia with meditation

I once read a thing somewhere–probably on Instagram, if I’m being honest–and it said something like:

“If you think everybody hates you, you probably need sleep. If you think you hate everybody, you’re probably hungry.”

And while I believe in validating people’s feelings and not gaslighting them into thinking it’s all in their heads … the above statement has often proven true for me. A lot of things start to fall apart when our basic needs aren’t being met. It shouldn’t be a privilege to be able to get a full night’s sleep (and yet here we are), but even those of us who have all of the access to time and tools for better sleep are often our own worst enemies when it comes to “sleep hygiene” (what a time to be alive).

I’m not going to pretend I’m writing this from any sort of high horse. I am as subject as any one of my peers to doom scrolling, watching TV, and generally activating my nervous system with the weight of the world and a blue light pointed directly at my eyeballs right before bed. But for those of you Googling this because you’re currently dealing with a bout of insomnia, I do have a seven minute guided meditation designed to help. It’s followed by 25 minutes of soothing music composed by my dear friend Drew Bathory to carry you into relaxation. If you’re lying there, phone in hand, wondering why you can’t sleep, my suggestion is to click this link, close this blogpost, and see if this mindfulness meditation for sleep helps you doze off.
