About

Dawn Mauricio at Yoga Mala 2011

My interest with the body began in my childhood, helping me to compete and excel in various sports at provincial levels in later years. When I was in university, working on a Bachelor’s of Commerce in Marketing from the John Molson School of Business, I started practicing yoga to help me cope with the endless projects, presentations, and group meetings.

While working in a Public Relations office, I was busy yet unfulfilled, and I missed challenging my mind and body as I did in my athletic days. I left my PR job and traveled alone for several months, at which time I completed my first meditation retreat in Northern Thailand.

Upon my return, I was newly inspired by a yoga practice that was now deepened with meditation, and I felt a drive to share with others all that I had learned. I completed my first yoga teacher training later that year and have been teaching full-time since 2006. Since then, I have completed over 1,000 hours of trainings and continue to sit regular meditation retreats. Over the years, my style of teaching has evolved into a playful and dynamic vinyasa approach that incorporates my experience in Mindfulness Meditation.

Naturally, my journey towards personal growth evolved into an overall vision to share, to connect, and to create community. In 2007, I began organizing annual fundraisers to bring together, as well as to benefit, the community. After five years and raising close to $25,000, the initiative turned into a non-profit organization called Yoga Mala Foundation that funds yoga teachers to start on-going yoga programs in areas of need (e.g. at-risk youth, low income families, seniors, palliative care, rehabilitation, battered women, etc.). I am also the owner of Passport to Prana Montreal, North America’s first multi-studio card.
